NBL Latest Player Signings

Posted on 19 June 2009 by Aj

Prior to June 19th these are the latest player signings in the NBL.

The Adelaide 36ers have signed 3 local players to the team. Jacob Holmes, Brad Hill and Darren Ng.

“I have been involved with Jacob for a number of years and his work ethic, experience and leadership are all extremely important characteristics needed to develop successful teams. He has always been a very good rebounder and defender and I look forward in him continuing to improve as a player and being a fixture here for many years to come.”

Regarding the signing of Hill, Ninnis said: “Brad Hill will be one of the surprise packets and big improvers of the upcoming season. His work ethic during the off season has been outstanding and his perimeter game and confidence are quickly catching up with his unquestionable athleticism and he should establish himself as a top flight performer for the Adelaide 36ers for the next decade.”

About Ng, Ninnis said: “Bringing Darren back home is especially pleasing and his ability to be a game breaker will quickly re-establish him as a fan favourite with the Adelaide 36ers faithful. His perimeter shooting is right at the top rung of players in this country and we look forward to him being a major contributor for us in the 2009/10 season.”

James Harvey will return to the Gold Coast Blaze after he signed a contract. He was still deciding whether he should go to Europe to play.  But he stayed in the NBL because he believes the competition is going to be competitive.

The Wollongong Hawks have announced the signing of forward Cameron Tragardh for the 2009/10 NBL season.

Tragardh will re-join the Hawks for his third season with the club and can’t wait to play in front of the fans that have done so much over the past three months to save the last remaining foundation club from extinction.

NBL Great Jason Smith Announces Retirement

Posted on 19 June 2009 by Aj

After 14 years of success and 413 games in the NBL  it is time for Jason Smith to retire. Smith informed Basketball Australia on the 17th of his decision to retire and stated a lack of motivation as the reason for his announcement. Jason Smith not only was a great player in the NBL, he led Australia to some great things when he represented Australia at the Sydney and Athens Olympic Games as well as the 2006 Commonwealth Games and Captained tJason Smith Retires From NBLhe Boomers at the 2006 FIBA World Championship in Japan. He was vrey invloved with the basketball in Australia and it is sad to see him go, but only on the courts. He’ll still be very invloved with the league i’m sure. Maybe even take up a commentary spot like Andrew Gaze has.

NBL Latest Player Signings

Posted on 11 June 2009 by Aj

The Melbourne Tigers signed Chris Antsey and Mark Worthington on June 10. Which was probably the biggest news for the week. But there has been plenty of action in this off-season for the NBL.

The Wollongong Hawks have made their first signing by re-signing veteran Mat Campbell. He played a big part in Save The Hawks campaign and will be entering his 15th season in the league.

“Words can’t express what Mat has done the past three months in the fight to Save the Hawks, Mat has put in so much time and effort into saving this club and it’s a pleasure to be announcing Mat as our first player to be secured for the 2009/10 NBL season,” Hawks CEO Wayne Morris said.

“Firstly, I want to thank the entire community for getting behind the Save the Hawks campaign and giving me the opportunity to play on with the Wollongong ahm Hawks,” Campbell said.

“It’s an exciting opportunity for the club and the new community based organisation. I’m really looking forward to preparing over the next few months and getting ready to compete in front of a sold out crowd at our first home game against the Perth Wildcats on Friday 25 September.”

Gold Coast Blaze add free agent Mika Vukona, who was apart of the 2008-2009 South Dragons team. The Blaze have also already signed Adam Gibson, Tyson Demos, Greg Vanderjagt, Pero Cameron and Chris Goulding. Vukona is the player who will never give up on a play. Athletic small forward who runs the floor well and isn’t scared to bang bodies with the big guys.

Another recent addition to the Blaze squad is former West Sydney and Wollongong player Anthony Petrie.

“In my opinion, Anthony Petrie is probably one of the most underrated players in the league,” said Wright.

The Adelaide 36ershave re-signed star import Adam Ballinger.

“Adam has been the Club’s MVP for the last two years and is one of the elite, and most sought after power forwards in the competition, so getting him signed was always an absolute priority for us,” said Head Coach of the Sixers, Scott Ninnis.

“We were always aware there would be significant interest in Adam from other Clubs, so it is fantastic to see he has the utmost confidence in the Club and we look forward to a long and successful future together,” Ninnis added.

The Townsville Crocodileshave signed shooting guard Peter Crawford and forward Jeff Dowdell from last season’s Perth Wildcats playing roster to join the Crocs at ‘The Swamp’ in the 2009/10 season.

“Welcoming back ‘PC’ to Townsville is a major boost for us. He brings experience, athleticism and an exceptionally high work rate which we pride within the Crocs Club.

“He is a very good defender and will be taking a leadership role on the team.”

Crawford is definitely a top shooter and a good pickup by the Crocs.

Melbourne Tigers Sign Chris Antsey And Mark Worthington

Posted on 10 June 2009 by Aj

Once rivals, now teammates. The Melbourne Tigers have re-signed league MVP Chris Anstey and picked up free agent Mark Worthington. A duo, hopefully not to be messed with. When battling each other though, they seemed enemies and even the media believed they weren’t really that close as friends. We’ll have to see how that goes this coming NBL season.

Adelaide 36ers Sold

Posted on 08 June 2009 by Aj

The NBL team from South Australia the Adelaide 36ers have now found a new owner. They have been sold to the ‘Save Our Sixers’ consortium, which is headed by new club Chairman Mark Lewis. It was only a few weeks ago that the Sixers future was in jeoperdy as no one was up to take on the ownership.

“The sale of the 36ers to the Mark Lewis-led consortium is a major step forward for the team, ensuring the Adelaide club that competes in the NBL in 2009/10 will play as the 36ers,” said Sengstock. “That is clearly important to the people of Adelaide, who have long supported the club and see the 36ers as an iconic local South Australian sporting team. South Australia has long been a stronghold for basketball in Australia and we’re ecstatic that the NBL will continue to have sound representation there through the 36ers brand.”

“The board of Basketball Australia have worked closely with the incoming group to ensure they have the capacity to lay a foundation of long-term success for the team.”

The new 36ers chairman is the managing director of Bernie Lewis Home Loans and Bernie Lewis Wealth Management, as well as the son of former 36ers Chairman the late Bernie Lewis.

Adelaide will play their first game in the new league on September 26 against the Cairns Taipans in Cairns.

Posted on 11 May 2009 by Aj

Well first off, apologies for those who read that the NBL is not going ahead next season. It was really just based on rumor and most likely the outcome. But how wrong I was and I’m sure many others were too.

So, the NBL has decided to have a 2009-2010 season according to fox sports and other articles around the web. With just 7 teams. Adelaide, Perth, Townsville, Cairns, Wollongong, New Zealand and the Gold Coast. Continue Reading
