“To Stay, or to Go?” NBA Draft Preview

Posted on 24 June 2009 by basketbloginkid

The lottery results are in, the final measurements are in, and each team has gotten to examine each player both on and off the court. Teams are closing in on candidates for there draft picks. Usually by this time of year we have a very good sense of where each player will be playing next season, especially at the top. This year hasn’t been the same case. We have a consensus that Blake Griffin will be the no 1 overall pick. After that, it’s is a mess. Teams seem to have interest in many different guys, some who don’t appear to be the right fit. Teams will be trading all over the place to get a specific player.  That brings up the question, “To stay, or to go??”

The Grizzlies and Thunder pretty much control the way the rest of the lottery goes. They both have promising young point guards who they picked very high in previous drafts. That’s were the interesting part comes in. Spanish point guard Ricky Rubio is considered to be the second best prospect in this draft by many. Sitting right behind them are the Sacramento Kings who are in desperate need of a point guard. The Grizzlies are less likely to take Rubio because they already have an established back court while the Thunder have the possibility of moving Russel Westbrook to the 2.

The Kings have another first rounder and the first pick in the second round. That’s an intriguing package for both teams noting that the Kings could also throw in a big upside guy in Donte Greene also. So why hasn’t there been anything on a deal close to being agreed on? Both the Grizzlies and Thunder have shown a lot of interest in Hasheem Thabeet and could both use him. The Grizzlies could move Marc Gasol down to the 4 and play him along side Thabeet as they did with Darko. The Thunder could obviously use some length to improve that shaky front court that wasn’t completely healed by Nenad Kristic. At worst he provides solid depth off the bench while providing them with an intriguing prospect with a huge potential.

James Harden has also been considered a possibility for both teams. The guy thought most likely to slip has held his own through the combine. He was thought to be to small and not athletic enough but he was very impressive. He measured in very well at 6′5 with a long wingspan and showed that he’s without a doubt the best true shooting guard in this guard heavy draft. The Grizzlies don’t really have a big need for him but he could become a solid sixth man or a nice asset to OJ Mayo if they want to deal Conley to Portland. The Thunder could move him into the starting 2 spot very early if they decide to take him. He would add to there dynamite core of Westbrook, Durant, and Green.

Both teams each have a wild card pick also. The Grizzlies are high on Tyreke Evans and are rumored to be willing to take him at 2. He could make a great addition to the Grizzlies back court and make a very nice 3 guard rotation, or he could have the same effect that Harden could. They could most likely get him safely at 4 before the Wizards, but the Wizards are completely different situation.  The Grizzlies seem to be down to 3 guys, Rubio, Harden, and Thabeet with Jordan Hill as a distant possibility.

The Thunder’s wild card is baby-faced Stephen Curry. He would fit nicely along side Westbrook. Curry is a little raw playing point guard but so is Westbrook. 2 play makers won’t hurt. Westbrook is explosive and athletic while Curry is quick and has a deadly jump shot coming off screens. They have also been rumored to have been in talks for the no 1 pick. They may be willing to throw the kitchen sink and bring in Jeff Green to move up 2 spots. Griffin is the local prospect but that’s a bit too much. Their candidate’s are Rubio, Thabeet, Harden, Curry, and Hill.

As I said before, the Wizards are another interesting situation. they don’t want a rookie they want a vet. The guy teams will be trading up for could be anyone, Hill, Harden, Evans, Curry, or even Thabeet if he slips. The Mavs have a huge interest in Hill but they don’t really have that vet the Wizards are looking for. The Spurs could be dealing Manu Ginobli. The deal would also include the services of Etan Thomas and Nick Young. The Celtics have been listening to offers for both Rajon Rondo and Ray Allen. It would be interesting to see who the Celtics pick as they try to get younger but stay a contender.

Let’s review. The Grizzlies haven’t made any deals yet. With all the interest they could probably get a deal done. The Thunder have been in talks with the Clippers for Blake Griffin but that appears to be a long shot. The Kings want Rubio and are willing to trade up. They have the pieces but neither team has pulled the trigger. It’s still early, but if no deal is done while they’re on the clock could Rubio slide past both teams? Rubio has already stated that he will only play for the Kings or the Clippers, so does either team have the balls to take him? Anyway, the Wizards pick will be dealt. They’ll get an established player who will help them as they try to make noise in the playoffs next season.

With all this talk, what picks are being traded? Big names could be moved. T-Mac, Shaq, and Ginobli could all be moved on draft day. David Kahn wants to make a big splash on his first draft day. He’s talking to everyone. There’s a possibility that they could move up to 2 without using the no 6 pick. They would trade kevin love to the Grizzlies for what would ultimately be Ricky Rubio. Then they could snag another guy like Hill, or Derozan and have a super draft like the Blazers did when they got both Brandon Roy and Lamarcus Aldridge on the same day. Speaking of the Blazers, does anyone really expect them to stay at 23? They got a nice prospect in Jerryd Bayless who could be moved. He obviously showed that he can’t play point guard but there’s a reason a lot of people had him going 4 to the Thunder last year instead of Westbrook. He can score at will and some team would love to have him and use him properly. Every  organization will burn up the phone lines on draft night. they will each be faced with the question, “To stay, or to go?”

Spurs Trade Bowen, Oberto, & Thomas for Richard Jefferson

Posted on 24 June 2009 by stubbs_21

Today was a big day around the NBA, it’s only a couple days until the 2009 NBA draft gets underway and many teams are looking to trade for picks or players. Many teams were in trade talks including the Suns and Wizards who talked about a Caron Butler, Amare Stoudemire swap. The Blazers also discussed some trades but I will talk about moves that actually did eventuate and how they will impact the teams involved.

The first trade of the day involved the Milwaukee Bucks and the San Antonio Spurs. The Bucks traded Richard Jefferson to the Spurs in exchange for veterans Bruce Bowen, Fabricio Oberto and Kurt Thomas.

I think this trade is obviously much much better for the Spurs, they get a good starting small forward which they have been looking for, for a while in Jefferson. He can go out and get you 20+ points a night. Jefferson could be what the Spurs need to legitimately contend once again in the Western Conference. Jefferson might provide Tim Duncan his last legitimate chance at one again being an NBA champion. He should fit in nicely with San Antonio and provide another scoring option for the Spurs who already have very capable scorers.

For Milwaukee on the other hand this takes away a capable scorer and probably hope of making the Eastern Conference Playoffs next season. I think Michael Redd and some other Bucks players won’t like this move because I think with Redd and Bogut healthy they could have made the playoffs in the East. But now most of that hope is gone. If Kurt Thomas stays with the Bucks they get a good backup for Bogut who is a very good defender and aggressive rebounder. They also get Bruce Bowen who is still a good defender but has seen his best days.

Later in the day, the Pistons and Bucks made a deal, the Bucks traded Fabricio Oberto who was already traded earlier for young Power Forward Amir Johnson. I think this is a better deal for the Bucks, they get a young PF who has good potential in exchange for an old veteran. This deal was mainly to clear up cap space for the Pistons, with Oberto they probably will waive him because his contract is non guaranteed.

Another big trade went down today. The Wizards traded Etan Thomas, Darius Songalia, Oleksiy Pecherov and the 5th overall pick to Minnesota for Randy Foye and Mike Miller. The Wizards have been looking to trade the 5th pick for a while and today they obviously saw a deal that they liked. They get a good combo guard with a lot of potential and who already knows how to run a team. They also get a veteran player in Miller who can shoot the lights out and is a good leader. This move by the Wizards indicates to me that the Wizards think they can make the playoffs in the East and possibly push top 5. With Gilbert Arenas healthy, Caron Butler and Antawn Jamison back and hopefully as healthy Brendan Haywood, I think the Wiz can compete in the East. Miller or Foye will probably come off the bench for Washington. For the Wolves this is obviously a move for the future. They get the 5th pick and now they have the 5th, 6th, 18th, 28th, 45th and 47th picks. They will probably draft a Point Guard and Shooting Guard and will probably get help for Kevin Love and Al Jefferson. This is a good future move for the Wolves.

Today was certainly an exciting day in the NBA, and I’m sure there will be more trades between now and the draft and even draft day deals.

Posted on 18 April 2009 by admin

John Wall might be eligible to declare for the 2009 NBA Draft though he has said he has no intention of doing so. For those that are confused at how he would be eligible, the NBA rules state that the player has to turn 19 during the year of declaration for the NBA Draft. For John Wall, that would be this year.

Blake Griffin Declares for 2009 NBA Draft

Posted on 08 April 2009 by admin

Blake Griffin of the Oklahoma Sooners

Blake Griffin of the Oklahoma Sooners

As if it is a surprise, Oklahoma Sooners big man Blake Griffin Declared for the 2009 NBA draft earlier. This hasn’t exactly been big news since the entire basketball nation is expecting and waiting for Blake Griffin to go first in the NBA Draft. In fact, the biggest surprise is which team is going to get him.

NBA teams are awaiting the NBA Draft Lottery to see who is going to get the number 1 pick in the draft. The winner of the draft is going to get the stud from Oklahoma. Blake Griffin.

The only question is, which lottery team wouldn’t need Blake Griffen? Surely this draft isn’t very deep but there are a couple teams who might not necessarily have a need for him at this point in time.

Does anybody think that there is a 2009 NBA Lottery team that wouldn’t draft Blake Griffin?

Let us know…

James Harden Declares for 2009 NBA Draft

Posted on 07 April 2009 by admin

James Harden Dunk

James Harden Dunk

Earlier today, James Harden declared for the 2009 NBA Draft. Many would say it weren’t really big news had they not known about Harden’s recent talks about joining Arizona State for one more year in hopes to win the national title. James Harden was the first Arizona State player to be named first-team All American and has widely been considered a top 5 pick in the upcoming draft.

James Harden had been legitimately thinking of returning to Arizona State for another year. I’m sure Arizona State would love it for him to return and most likely have an even better year as he would no doubt dominate the younger classes.

Though, I’m sure the choice is all too easy. Sure you have your doubts about whether or not you should stay another year. Most people will argue that staying as long as possible in college allows the player to develop more and be a bit more ready once they enter the professional world of NBA basketball. There is just that one tiny problem.

The money.

Chances are, most of you have never been waved a couple million dollars in order to sign up to become a part of the worlds most talented basketball league. I’m sure everybody would take it. Though, Tyler Hansbrough had that option last year and chose not to declare. That’s probably because many didn’t think he had what it takes to enter yet. He is still not considered a top five pick and nbadraft.net doesn’t even expect him to be a lottery pick.  In fact, nbadraft.net has the player that’s been talked about for 2 seasons now going at numbe 25.

When most of the country thinks you are ready to be a player in the NBA and you start thinking about living in a giant house with a nice car while sitting in a smelly dorm playing video games, you start to think about how you are going to make millions of dollars the next year and all you have to do is sign your name on a peice of paper and send it in. Not a very difficult choice is it?

2009 NBA Mock Draft

Posted on 14 March 2009 by basketbloginkid

What a year of college basketball it’s been. We’ve seen so many good teams rise above expectations like Kansas and Memphis. We’ve seen teams falter miserably, yes you Notre Dame. The power shift at the top has been exciting to watch as it seems as though at least 1 top team is knocked of their horse. As the season winds down, we begin to look at where we will see these players on the big stage. Here’s our first edition of the Binary Basketball 2009 NBA Mock draft.

There’s a few things I’d like to say about my judgment before you start hating on me, you won’t though because everyone loves me, right? I don’t see the Spanish phenom Ricky Rubio coming out this year. He’s seems to be comfortable in Europe, but he’d make a fine point guard. Secondly I’d like to point out that I tend to favor the guy with a huge potential, rather than the less athletic but more fundamentally sound guy. Third, I like guys with NBA size. I just feel like size plays such a big role in today’s game. And lastly, teams have not been taken into account yet.

Also if you don’t see any other underclassmen that you feel should be here, I most likely have them staying another year.

On to the goods…
