Once again, as I'm sure many of you have already heard, Tim Donaghy has made the headlines once again in a recent barage of allegations against the NBA's officials that takes the form of the most potent potion to date. Tim Donaghy has moved mountains and shocked something like a fraction of NBA fans at the same time.
As we all know, Tim Donaghy has been the focus of attention for his involvement in a betting scandal for which he is currently imprisoned. Though, it didn't just stop there and thank god too -- that wouldn't have been exciting at all. In response to the lack of a willing audience for his previous whistleblowing attempt (my words, not his attempt at , he decided to stop talking and shut up for a while.
Tim Donaghy then spent his free time between lifting weights and taking showers in prison to write a book covering the entire depth of the betting scandal that sent him to jail for the first time.
He was forced to go back to jail after after an unfortunate decision to go to the gym near his halfway house in an attempt to rehabilitate the knee injury he suffered while being beaten with a metal pipe during his first visit to the penitentiary. The interesting part is that at the time, Donaghy and his lawyers expected the misunderstanding regarding his probation violation, would be resolved within 10 days. Looking back at that article, it seems I wrote it on August 25th. One would be hard pressed to find somebody so obtuse as to allow themselves to go back to the penitentiary where instead of fending off cameras and accusations you have to fend off, well, I'm sure those "of age" don't require any more detail.
My take though is that misunderstanding or not, I don't know that I could support the imprisonment of somebody for going to the gym. It's certainly not because I'm pro gym or anything of that nature because truth be told, it's a place I tend to avoid. It seems as though times really are changing when taking a stance on pro or anti gym feels as uncomfortable as discussing politics to untold numbers of strangers on some sort of Internet basketball blog. But that's just stupid...
The point I'm really trying to make is that throughout this entire ordeal, Tim Donaghy has not benefited in even the slightest bit for his efforts in making his story be heard. As a fan of the NBA and only the NBA, I don't have the pleasure of using Football or Baseball as my safety sport or anything. This league turns sour, my world gets crushed. The last thing I want is to find out is that we have to go through the dark ages for a few years in the NBA becasue somebody was cashing in on an opportunity to destoy my passion.
The other important point I'd like to make is that my stance on this issue is only backed by my love for the game. So, while some major league jerks focus on praising the inmate that beat Tim Donaghy, that's not a cause I can get behind. It's too bad because I'm a lifelong Phoenix Suns fan and agreed with the rest of the article. Though, once again, I find myself motivated to call him a jerk once more for exposing me to the blatantly fixed Phoenix Suns/San Antonio Spurs series that I've been complaining about ever since it that whole business went down.
The heroes here are actually Deadspin for their gung-ho attitude at aiming the barrel of the very metaphorical gun wherever they damn well please. With their ninja skills at obtaining a copy of the book the NBA doesn't want you to read comes their immediate follow up, which is the release of the book the NBA doesn't want you to read in the convenient pocket "excerpt" size chunks so you can take your doses of anger and contempt in healthier, more manageable doses.
With all these books coming out, I thought it a good time to release my anticipated design of comissioner Stern's next book.

You see, the problem we are facing is that we are reading this entire situation wrong and the fact of the matter is David Stern's intelligence and ability to exploit the weakness of an individual in this cloudy circumstance all the while allowing you to think you know what's going on because you partially do.
The problem is when you begin talking fraud in the NBA. See, that's a real bad start. Seeing as how we are not talking about the Phoenix Suns straight owning the Golden State Warriors last night, we can drop this little act and stop calling it a game.
You can probably find some sort of inverse relationship somere in that difference. My guess is it lies somewhere after the point where we bring up the discussion about the realistic potential for arresting a business owner for unfairly manipulating his market in an attempt to increase personal financial gain. Unless I missed class the day we covered this subject in school, I was always under the impression that the constructed ideals of an open market was to increase competition amongst those lucky enough to participate, it drives the prices on products I care very little about just low enough so that i might be interested enough to bring whatever crap it is home with me.
So while we are on the subject, let me just bring in a ray of sunshine to finish this off. The emergence of independent analysis and culture the Internet brings to the sport of basketball enriches the sport at the same time. Basketball is just a game. A game I love. With the obvious effect bloggers have had on the culture and even business of basketball, you rest assured the game still belongs to us. As long as we have the ability to express ourselves freely and share our passion, the true fans of the game will maintain it's integrity.
While Tim Donaghy is being blamed for singlehandedly destroying the integrity of the sport, I feel as though he may be bringing the integrity back. It's clear enough to me that there is enough evidence to allow ourselves to at least have enough trust in his words to consider them in a social fight against the injustice that's bringing down the sport we all obviously care about.
